Afternoon tea has more than shed its guise of boring watercress sandwiches and so-so brewed tea from a grandmas teapot, complete with cosy. The call of the five-star Knightsbridge Jumeirah Hotel Montezuma Afternoon Tea, was the perfect excuse to relax, catch up with old friend Shukeena, and have a treat or two from the menu created by master Patissier Eric Lanlard. I was early for my reservation, I was quickly seated within Chinoiserie. As I grazed the menu, there was lots of chocolate ( so already was getting the browning points) I knew I was in for some surprises, as the selection was definitely more original than what I was used to . How does smoked venison in a chocolate macaroon sound to you? Before you order they do ask if you eat pork, as surprisingly in a chocolate menu it comes up a lot.
I have to give a special mention to concierge Alif who was so gracious a host, we were not left wanting. The spread comes out on a circular metal stand, each delicacy so grand, we both looked at each other, and said but it’s too pretty to eat! You have a choice of tea from the classic Earl grey to flavoured (same with the coffee I couldn’t resist a frothy cappuccino, that came with a fresh shortcake biscuit dusted with sugar, heaven) Every piece was moreish, and absolutely delicious, I started with the cocoa dusted croissant, and white crab tart with white chocolate. I think it was important that the chocolate was subtle otherwise it would have been sickly but somehow the combination as strange as it sounds had a punch.
Just when you were enjoying the richness of the range of chocolate delights there became apparent hidden textures, and undertones from the oozing caramel to the chocolate popping candy. Our conversation was littered with giggles, out and out laughter and “ooooh, this is delicious, have you tried…?” against the strings of the resident harpist Priced at £40 per person you are paying for the excellent service as well as the five-star food, and I am definitely making a return visit. The Jumeirah afternoon tea runs from 3-6pm Check out the full menu
