I’ve heard tell that what you imagine sometimes comes true.
Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Charlie and the chocolate factory is one of the great Roald Dahl stories, I would read over and over again as a child. I would dream that I was one of the chosen few who would go on a chocolate adventure, and hopefully not meet my demise in a deliciously sticky end. One Aldwych is the official hotel partner of Charlie and the chocolate factory musical, so it is fitting that they would base an afternoon tea inspired by the Roald Dahl classic.
My preconception was that the afternoon tea would be in the wild and bold Tim Burton quirky remake of the tale, with me leaving in a chocolate coma. Overall it was more classic in keeping with the one Axis venue, the tea was full of little surprising and clever touches. They made an amazing first impression with the Cocktail Charlie. The clear teapot was like a pretty science experiment as the liquid bubbled, and misted over. I thought it was yummy, a Dalmore Whiskey mixed with luxardo cherry sangue Morlacco, chocolate bitters, grapefruit juice and cherry syrup, topped with champagne. The Chef was reserved, sticking to the classic savoury sandwiches we all know and love for afternoon tea, such as egg mayonnaise with watercress and smoked salmon. The sweet was to be the star of the tea.
Lets see if you are really Charlie aficionados and see if you can spot the references in the dessert combinations. Brought over in a tiered block the selection of desserts were in perfect duos. Thanks to my treat day partner in crime Kirsty, I got to indulge in both of the golden chocolate eggs filled with vanilla cheesecake and mango, because of her aversion to cheese. Our wonderful Host Michael supplemented with a chantilly cream alternative just for her. Also on the sweets menu:
- Chocolate caramel milk served in a miniature glass bottle with stripe straws.
- Eton mess-topped with what looked like marshmallows, but were meringues
- Homemade candy floss, which was super light, fluffy and not too sweet.
- Lime, coconut and white chocolate pop
- Cocoa bean financier
- Blueberry brioche
- Warm scones served with summer berry jam, apple and meadowsweet compote, and Devonshire clotted cream.
