Game Over
Donning black polka dots against red tartan shirts, and swirled words in ribbon, models walked the catwalk in fine veils and pleated skirts. When I first saw the collection by Ciara Ip, Meadham Kirchhoff flashed in my mind ( a small world as the designer has previously interned at the design house as a pattern cutter) it was like playing dress up and creating a manifesto of clashing styles that somehow made complete sense. What made the collection memorable was the amalgamation of romanticism of the tulle, juxtaposed with the cool sucker punch schoolgirl; taking a direct quote from Ciara Ip about the inspiration the collection was in fact about ”contrasts-tailoring, tulle, bitter brides, and sinister schoolgirls.” The style was built and built layering a fine pin stripe shirt, over a voluminous ballgown tulle, layered again with a fitted jacket, and pop of red with a Cambridge satchel backpack emblazoned in ribbon game over. Game over indeed.
