Coffee Chocolate Swirl Marble Hearts

This is my first official recipe for the Lavazza coffee set match challenge I present to you Coffee cake with chocolate swirls, when i cook everything is pretty rough, and I just take, and exchange things from conventional recipes so i encourage you to do the same add some walnuts, top with more chocolate, hell even swap the chocolate to suit your own sweet tooth how about maple? or even jam? but for accuracy here are a few instructions for you

180g/6oz butter
180g/6oz brown sugar
3 eggs
100g Plain chocolate (or whatever chocolate you fancy how about with nuts for extra bite)
180g/6oz self-raising flour
2 tsp instant coffee granules, dissolved in 1 tbsp boiling water ( I used 1 Lavazza coffee pod)

1.Preheat the oven to 180C/365F/Gas 4. Grease the cake tin (Iuse butter or oil whichever is to hand)

2.Whisk together the butter and sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy. Whisk in the eggs, one at a time, until smooth and well combined. Fold in the flour, and the instant coffee mixture.

3. Melt the plain chocolate in a glass bowl over a pot of bowling water, once fully melted allow to cool

4. Pour the cake mixture into the cake tin, then get the melted chocolate and put random splodges on the mixture, then use a fork to gently create the swirl don’t mix too much otherwise it would just turn into chocolate cake

5. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden-brown and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean, then leave to cool.

6. once cooled I had a little fun with the heart cookie cutters, now should be great to eat on its own with cream or custard, Enjoy.

Just thought I’d do an introduction post to let you know what all this #coffeesetmatch stuff is about. Lavazza is the official coffee for Wimbledon and I was invited to take part in a battle to the death with other bloggers over coffee culinary ( I exaggerate for effect) I was gifted the Lavazza coffee machine and other coffee delights in my endeavour to create a variety of coffee recipes every week, and if this gorgeous machine wasn’t lovely enough there is a chance for me to win two Wimbledon tickets, and the final winner to have the chance to have all expense luxury trip to the home of Lavazza in Turin, Italy. Oh the glamorous life of a blogger racing through London depending on London transport to get to two morning appointments on time, this is exactly the situation I found myself on Tuesday. I had a super early appointment at the Westminster Harrow campus to interview students ahead of their graduate catwalk ( more on that to come) but left early to ensure I could attend the press view of the newest exhibition Ballgowns, British Glamour since 1950 which was due to end at 1pm. Well I got there at 12.40 (thanks TFL) but I still had just enough time to get the pictures that I needed, at first glance I was pretty confused, as the exhibition was to coincide with the newly refurbished fashion gallery space, but I completely agree with Coco’s tea party in that it looked exactly the same. The V&A is one of my favourite museums but I couldn’t help feeling a sense of deja vu, hadn’t I taken these pictures already? but please keep going, the displays have been refreshed with over 60 ballgowns from 195o to more contemporary designers. The star space is in fact upstairs, a bright open gallery housing red carpet, evening, and catwalk ballgown masterpieces including Sarah Burton for McQueen, Felicity Brown, Dior, out from behind the glass on giant pearls underneath modern chandeliers. Some gowns are on spinning pearl turntables reminiscent of the twirling ballerinas that spun when you opened the jewellery box, specially commissioned images by fashion photographer David Hughes are projected on to the domed ceilings adding another special detail to the exhibition. Louboutin

The Louboutin retrospective is probably the most anticipated fashion exhibition in a while, showcasing a library masterclass of footwear against a fantasy backdrop, and a hologram of the queen of the tease herself, the Design Museum have set themselves as the place to visit. The exhibition is open until the 9th July 2012, with an accompanying Hardcover coffee table book to buy from the Design shop as a luxurious memento; also check out my full review of the exhibition with pictures by Luke Hayes on Societe Perrier London.

For those that know me I like to wear my hair up, no muss no fuss, a quiff at the front not to be too boring, or a fringe with a beehive, and Alice band; but I have always been on the hunt for the perfect curl. When I have my hair down on those rare occasions I much prefer to have messy or loose curls, straight bobs do nothing for me; I own a regular curling iron that shows me no love (also my straightener refusing to curl and mocking me as this is obviously not the original purpose) curls look great for about 10 minutes and effectively losing its bounce within minutes of strong wind even with industrial hairspray. The beauty gods have blessed me with a waving tong for perfect Marcel locks, but damn it I am greedy, and want every kind of curl so step in the Windle & Moodie revolving curling iron ( if this was a video I would insert some bright lights, a trumpet, and a choir). I only came across the brand at the Modus AW12 press day, watching the stylist work his magic with the ultra thin tong flitting around creating the exact curls I wanted ( corkscrew) in minutes. Having secured a sample I tested the shizzle out of it, and it does what it says on the tin, well the box, once plugged in the LED screen flashes blue you then wait for the temperature to heat to 180 degrees, and simply press plus or minus to adjust to the temperature you need. The really cool part is the revolving barrel, once secured you simply twist the barrel and your hair wraps itself into the iron barrel, hold for about 7 seconds then turn the barrel again until your hair is released. So no more awkward twisting of your head, burns, or having the lead all tangled up as you have to hold your hand at weird angles to get the desired effect, I am very impressed once my hair cooled the curls stayed put. I am a very happy bunny indeed.

A Midsummer Nights Dream

Paul & Joe went off with the fairies with this latest Limited edition collection… no really the selection of nail varnishes, lip glosses, and shimmering powder took inspiration from Shakespeares’ classic Midsummer Nights dream a tale of Fairy royalty, jealousy, love & hijinks. From the campaign I particularly love the look of the shimmering body lotion to me fantasy re-imagined of the love potion that caused havoc in the hands of Puck. I got a sample of the Fairy kisses Lip gloss exclusively sold at Asos The Art Deco case almost too pretty to even touch, the bright iridescent yellow-lime green gloss actually goes on clear and gives a subtle glimmer.

Last season it was all about putting each diffusion line in their own right but with its autumnal hues of burnt orange, dark florals, browns, and navy blue the alamagation of Hobbs guises, Invitation, London & Unlimited was styled to be more integrated, mixing and matching across the ranges, and knowing that they would fit together. Strong pea coats, and fitted jackets were layered over dresses, with contrasting pleated skirts, perfect for work wear layered with a blouse, or tee during the day, then for evening to wear alone. Another clever touch was the leather peplum against the polka dot dress, following the trend of many uses it is actually removable, so you can transform any look, the detailed, and beaded peter pan collars interchangeable as well. NW3 for Autumn Winter is more sophisticated with tweed wide leg trousers, voluminous midi skirts cable cardigans,and long blazers replacing the twee vintage schoolgirls represented in spring summer. To get the NW3 look pair a mustard sweater with burgundy red cord jeans, antique gold scissor pendant, and tan leather tote.

Georgia Rule

Where have you been? you should know how much of a fan of Georgia Nash I am, ever since the chance meeting in Spitalfields I have been smitten. I was lucky enough to get a full preview of the collection before the Alternative Fashion Week catwalk (how very Anna Wintour of me) and as much as I loved it then, it was great to see the clothes fully styled on the models, in a bigger space with Spitalfields market as the back drop. Brocade, bows, ribbons, heavily embellished belts, and collars ( all by hand) on fur-lined dress coats, fitted embellished jackets,lingerie, sheer skirts, and dresses; distinctly vintage-esque, no jeans here ladylike elegance. The collaboration with HerCuriousNature of bespoke beaded feather headpieces, quaint circular decorated fascinators, and exotic like tier drop head adornments were a perfect match, bringing together a fusion of vintage and contemporary design.

Kirk Originals threw a party to celebrate their win at the Optician awards winning Fashion Frames Practice of the Year. They opened their Conduit store doors and basically just let us all play around with the looks pulling glasses right off the stands and pouting away in the adjacent mirror (yeah I did it too). Live music was provided by Singer Sophie Hiller and later on a DJ set from Leke Aerosoul; The post is light on pictures as I was having too great a time catching up with Leroy, Philippe, Sunshine, and Toyin, and I can’t really remember laughing so hard, the good times spilled over into the Fashion TV party at Sketch, congratulations again Kirk. catch more pictures from the night on the Adorngirl Facebook page with a few pictures by Stuart Watt.

A Bizarre Adventure

The Bizarre Adventure is an exhibition showcasing surreal delusions formed by two artists encounters in London set inside the Luna & Curious gallery in Shoreditch, I would say that its more of a showcase as the pieces are available to buy. Luna & Curious itself is a must see shopping destination; a boutique housing printed inks, English fine bone china, hand stitched silks, beautiful taxidermy and wonderful works of art. The artists in question are Yuki Nishimura : A professional illustrator and animator based in London and Japan, her lovely demeanour and soft-spoken tone to me makes her work of beautifully topsy-turvy worlds of surreal drawings even more interesting; think of the imagined dimensions of Tim Burton, Dr Zeuss, and Dali. Naohiro Seki, Art director of Vicious Sabrina, Jewellery Designer and Artist, based in London and Tokyo, Japan has created specimen infused jewellery entitled Accessory of curiosities an element Entomology with bees, spiders, and precious stones encased in domes set on ornate metal necklaces. Pay close attention or you might miss it, a special attention to detail, that will make you gasp, the exhibition is open until the 8th May @ Luna & Curious, 24 – 26 Calvert Avenue, London E2 7JP.
