Coveted Gold
Gold is has always been the precious metal that is coveted, and none more than the George gold award at the 2012 GFW 2012 Gala show, a £20,000 prize that could shape a career ( Christopher Bailey a previous winner). This year Chloe Jones from the Bath Spa University captured the imagination of esteemed judges including Suzy Menkes, Daphne Guinness, David Bailey and a bevy of other industry heavyweights; grey marl sweatshirts with appliqued shoulders, and trim teamed with sheer maxi dresses the epitome of the successful formula of the juxtaposition of sport and femininity. Her delight was obvious at receiving the gold prize as she had also taken the womenswear award as well, I am sure this is a night she will not forget. A lot of the nominations were from the same universities, and I hope that it was not just down to lack of time of judges to view every show to get an accurate view of all the talent during graduate week, so let’s not forget about the other winners, and nominees. The International award was won by Karen Jessen from Esmod Berlin, whilst the knitwear award was shared between Manchester graduate Jousianne Propp, and Kingston University’ Caitlin Charles Jones. The textile award presented by Fred Butler was awarded to designer Xiaoping, and Riona Horrox from Edinburgh bagged the Menswear award.
Overall an amazing night that produced surprises, the photographic veteran that is Chris Moore was completely blindsided as the spotlight for once shone on the photographer pit, ( literally a bright spotlight was shone right into our faces) the genius behind catwalking.com taking home the lifetime achievement award.
