Founded in 2013 Gee Woods jewellery specialises in bespoke commissioned pieces alongside a curated ready-to-wear collection. Retail Jeweller the leading magazine in watch and jewellery, has recently named Gee Woods as one of their thirty rising stars under thirty. A Gemologist and Jewellery Designer at the Gemological Institute of America, Gee honed her craft over five years in custom-made jewellery, whilst working for a leading London Jeweller. I met up with the Designer at her studio and I may have got a little side-tracked from the interview, she was such a pleasure to talk to and her enthusiasm and apparent joy of being able to do what she loves for a living, was infectious. We talked all things original, and her love of bespoke.
Tell me about your line?
All my jewellery is understated and chic. My main collection is purely bespoke as clients bring me their treasured jewellery, whether inherited valuable family heirlooms, or old jewellery that needs a bit of care. I love taking their pieces apart, I can set any stone from diamonds rubies to sapphires, and work closely with clients to ensure that they end up with a one of a kind piece they love. The ready to wear comes in at a lower price point, for something just that little bit more affordable and simple enough to be able to be worn everyday, which is more my style. My favourite pieces are the spinning rings and the Yellow Gold and Citrine Soles Auro Pendant because its s bit quirky and reminds me of a little tank. The most popular pieces from the ready to wear are definitely the orbital rings.
What is your design process?
I constantly sketch and doodle finding inspiration from all around me, I particularly look for linear lines, and my new collection is really fun. I design here in the studio and everything is made in workshops around Clerkenwell. My brand will never be about mass production, so I am very unlikely to venture into having my own physical retail shop. It is so fun for me to do something different with every client, I like that my jewellery can be adaptable to what each person needs.
