Black & Gold

Showcasing design, media and imagery from the London College of Fashion’s MA Graduate School, the MA 11 exhibition held at Victoria House was truly awe-inspiring.  You know when something inspires you so much you want to have a change of career? you see gorgeous garments and you think all I need is a sewing machine, or a painting and suddenly you want to start that as a hobby (no just me, then) Well today all I wanted was to be a part of the MA Artefact course, each designer focused on challenging astethetics, and creating pieces which thought outside boundaries whilst  still managing to have a distinct point of view. There was too much talent and disciplines to squeeze in to one post so for now I am focusing on black & Gold. Oliver Ruuger the winner of the  MA Award in Design (off catwalk) was striking, black leather (or it could be rubber) porcupine spikes from a briefcase, and heavy gold bobble studding throughout the collection. The curving twists of the umbrella handle….. (I could go on all day) The jeweller Hanwen Shen focused on the nape of the neck, think memoirs of a geisha, and the cultural significance as that part of the body being sensual, and erogenous.  The neck brace- like golden mould curves with the neck, head and shoulders to further highlight this femininity.

Chan Jung Kim created Futuristic shoe boots which reminded of a mix between a dominatrix gladiator, and something the greek messenger Hermes would have worn if he was a fabulous woman. Gold fine heels contrasted against black leather made for statement shoes. that I am sure a lot of us would want for fashion week.   Kat Marks neck pieces were set against a backdrop of  The Karass, a short Showstudio  film with fashion direction by Alexander Fury directed by Nick Knight  featuring Edita for A/W 2011.  ( I’ve added the video to the post make sure to watch, its only a minute you have time). Constructed using vegetable tan leather, and rigid plastic and moulded into the ultimate fashion bib with an added glamour of hanging tails. The Exhibition is being held at the Victoria House Basement, and is open to the public from 12-7pm, and set to close 9 Feb 2011.

Wow. That’s all I can say. Some of the most innovative and beautiful couture pieces I’ve seen in a while! I particularly like the spiked and studded briefcase. Seriously – I’m incredibly impressed! Great post :)
