It may have been London fashion week but Mother of Pearl for SS17 reimagined New York Stories. At the time I thought it was odd that each model’s lipstick application appeared juvenile. The bright red went way past the lip line, reminiscent of how we applied lipstick playing dress-up, when we were little girls. True to the 80’s cult film the beauty choice was a direct homage to the life of Zoe, the twelve year old applying lipstick in the back of the car, on the way to school wearing Chanel. Against the regal backdrop of Christ Church was a line-up that opened with denim on denim.
Of course pearls were prominent detail accents and embellishment throughout the collection. White pearls adorned collars, cuffs, and midway up the arm as a trim, creating a billowing puffy sleeve on the blouses. One particular standout coat silhouette played with shoulder proportion. The pearls were like chic pins holding a pattern in place whilst the seamstress sewed. The styling was really on point this season with long sleeved tops under shorter sleeved flowey dresses. I also appreciated the fact the collection included outerwear for SS17, they understand the commercial advantage to presenting what women want to wear in our everyday lives. I am all for a see-through tutu dress, but I can’t exactly wear that on my school run in the rain. It’s London, after all. Mother of Pearl SS17 had an easy luxe, it wasn’t too worked or pristine but so cool.
