When someone gives a you beautiful little box that is already surprise enough, now imagine the extra delight when the simple band slides at the touch to reveal a coloured gem. Joanna Hemsley has created a series of brooches, and rings that at first appear as uniform bland shapes, but haven’t we all learned to not judge a book by its cover?
“Jewellery exists both on and off the body. ‘Reflex’ focuses on the journey between these two states and injects surprise into the moment a piece is lifted to be worn.
My work explores the potential that mechanisms have to animate objects by imparting motion where it is not expected and by bringing playfulness and life to conventionally static jewellery forms.
I aim to create an unexpected moment of delight for the wearer or simply put a smile on their face.”
The jewellery is created with a clever mechanism that when picked up, slides to reveal its full design (once static even the designer didn’t know which design was behind the square). Joanna was part of the RCA static exhibition that is free and runs until July 1st.
