Style & Substance

You get to the event on time, you ask the lovely PR at the door to guide you to the room you are supposed to go it was Paramount after all with just over 30 floors so it was not really about trying every room until you get to the right place.  Finally I’m there and the buzz of the crowd let’s me know I am in the right place except there are name tags, and my name is not there, “maybe someone else took it,” another PR claimed, but a quick scan of the room made it plainly obvious that no one else there could possibly be called Ashanti, but I am ushered in regardless, I mean of course I was supposed to be there.  I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, something didn’t feel right as the invite for Windows 7 and Poppy Dinsey claimed it would be an intimate dinner not canapes on the go (  a few of which I was trying to eat tidily over a napkin, having already downed some champagne) with a bg crowd of people who were standing in groups, and wait why was the tv on? turns out I was at the Sky event.

Luckily it had only been about ten minutes so I was able to join the party I was actually invited to which was a presentation of the spring collection of Ultrabooks hosted by Windows 7. Robert Epstein repping Windows UK was obviously proud of the products, really these ultrabooks were a writers dream super thin, lightweight, and super long battery life, and oh so pretty ( Rose gold baby) A selection of laptops were passed around so we all could get a better look and feel of some of the models; magazine size but even thinner machines included the Asus Zenbook, HP Envy Spectre, and HP Touchsmart 520. I am not going to copy off the press release about the spec, and features of the models because I am no tech freak, and I don’t understand all that stuff as a blogger all I need to know is will I be able to use Photoshop elements, and video editor without the server crashing upload, and post.  How heavy is it? so that I can lug it around just as much as my camera.

However the tablet intrigued most because I have a Samsung galaxy tab but the difference with the one I was holding was that it had the capability of a fully fledged computer, which makes a change from the widely overrated flat screen that everyone is carrying around to save face.  What was great about the dinner (delicious by the way) was the discussion about style over substance what exactly as Bloggers, Editors, and industry actually want their laptops to be,  if Windows were to provide laptops during fashion week would we care, the answer was a very loud yes, and the consensus was style, was just as important as the substance of the machine. Amazing that there was a pink case but not to alienate a female audience by marketing it as the ‘female’ computer and other great ideas but I don’t think I want to reveal them, as wouldn’t that count as insider trade secrets? let’s hope that some of the ideas are followed through.
